Washington, D.C. — In a groundbreaking move, the Biden administration has granted $698,736.00 to the Center for Innovative Public Health Research, based in San Clemente, Calif., to develop an inclusive sexual health program for transgender teen boys and nonbinary youth assigned female at birth. This initiative aims to address the lack of appropriate sex education for these individuals, who face unique challenges in sexual health outcomes.
THE NEED FOR INCLUSIVE SEX EDUCATION
Transmasculine and nonbinary teens often find themselves excluded from mainstream sexual health programs, which are typically cisgender and heteronormative. Despite being at risk for negative sexual health outcomes, they do not receive tailored education that resonates with their gender-diverse experiences. The #TranscendentHealth program seeks to bridge this gap and provide comprehensive sexual health education and support.
TAILORED TO DIVERSE NEEDS
Recognizing the diverse needs of youth across the nation, the program will be adapted to cater to different regions, urban or rural settings, and various factors influencing sexual health decisions. With a focus on inclusivity and promoting condom use, #TranscendentHealth aims to empower transgender teen boys and nonbinary youth with the knowledge and resources necessary for informed sexual health choices.
ADDRESSING CRITICAL GAPS
The lack of specific programming has contributed to obstacles in sexual health for assigned female at birth (AFAB) trans-identified youth. Data suggests that AFAB trans youth may face challenges like decreased condom use and comparable pregnancy rates to cisgender girls. This program intends to fill these critical gaps and provide essential sexual health information.
BUILDING ON PREVIOUS SUCCESS
The program draws inspiration from the center’s previous work with Girl2Girl, a successful project delivering sexual health information to gay, lesbian, and bisexual cisgender teen girls via text messaging. The adaptation into a trans-inclusive program involves convening focus groups to understand the factors affecting sexual health decisions among AFAB trans and nonbinary youth.
TESTING EFFECTIVENESS & END GOALS
To ensure the program’s effectiveness, the center will monitor responses from these young individuals and conduct testing among 700 teens. The goals include increasing condom and contraception use, promoting testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and facilitating access to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention.
DURATION & URGENCY
Commencing in September, the project is set to continue through June 30, 2027. Its importance is underscored by the current landscape where some states hinder teens from accessing sexual health information and gender-affirming care. #TranscendentHealth stands as a vital initiative in creating a more inclusive and informed approach to sexual health education for trans male teens and nonbinary youth.
